Once upon a time, in the magical land of the Buckeyes, there lived a girl with a love of fashion Buckeye football. She loved the myriad of styles that she saw every day walking around campus at THE Ohio State University, especially the trend of soft, fluffy cable-knit sweaters topping off leggings tucked into tall leather riding boots. But alas! This young girl had spent her youth riding horses, learning sword-craft, and playing volleyball while helping family and neighbors with any and all chores they needed, all of which left her with what some companies refer to as an “athletic calf”. While the land of the Buckeyes, held a vast array of boots designed for those with petite, delicate calves, for those with a calf larger than the standard size of 14” to 14 and ¾“, there were few choices; thus, she set forth on a quest and lo! She discovered Zappos.com!
In all seriousness, there is nothing more frustrating than the quest for THE perfect boot, as tall boots have become a seasonal classic for fall and winter, with looks ranging from fierce, thigh-high leather stilettos, to gorgeous, flat, engineer styles. The search can be further complicated when you have an “athletic” calf, or thick, strong legs that have taken you all over the world and shouldered your burdens- but aren’t quite petite. I fell in love with Zappos long before I worked here, simply because I could sort by my size and calf measurement while questing for the perfect boot, which kept me from falsely finding the perfect thing, just to learn that it wasn’t made or available in my size.
So, this week, in celebration of the quest I’ve been helping many women complete, I bring you a selection of some of the amazing boots we carry, in a variety of calf-widths; I hope these help you bring together that perfect fall look.
Wide Calf: A wide-calf boot is a boot that measures 15 inches up to 17 ¾ inches. To find your measurement, measure at the widest point of your calf with your foot on a chair.
